Julia Blackburn is awesome. Seriously, this girl is sweet as fuck. I am super happy to know her. She is in the upcoming Mercury fashion show. I like how this stuff looks.

Designer Julia Blackburn (whose day job is as an art director for Wieden + Kennedy) is interested in telling a story with the pieces that constitute her line, Dust. Whether it be unusual mixes of colors and patterns, the image of a tattered ballerina costume, or highly textural meditations rendered in fabric, the pieces are memorable and meaningful, often revealing the process through exposed seams and threads, and viscerally evocative through ripped and hand-dyed fabrics. My friend Justin Kelly is a film maker. He is from San Francisco. Right now he is in Portland for two months workin' on a movie(not his). Dude is the sweetest and his work is specialty. Artists Nicholas Gurewitch and Tony Millionaire are brought together for one exciting exhibition. On April 3rd, 2008 Floating World Comics, Dark Horse Comics & Stumptown Comics Fest are proud to present the art of Gurewitch’s Perry Bible Fellowship and Millionaire’s Sock Monkey. Both comic strips have been featured in alternative weekly newspapers all over the world and are collected in book form by Dark Horse Comics.

Original art will be available for view and sale from both artists. Gurewitch will also be producing dozens of oversized prints of his favorite Perry Bible Fellowship strips which will also be on display and available for sale. The art opening is on First Thursday, April 3rd. Nicholas will appear in person on Last Thursday, April 24th at the store from 7-9PM.

Who: Takahiro Miyashita, Designer of Japanese label Number (N)ine
Where: The Menswear Fall 2008 Show in Paris
This past week in Paris, Japanese label Number (N)ine debuted their Fall 2008 Collection, titled My Own Private Portland. Miyashita’s love of all things Portland, including Gus Van Sant and early 90’s grunge clichés, were romanticized and updated to create comfortable yet sophisticated looks for Fall. The collection included plaid shirts, beaten-up boots, corduroy jackets, fringed moccasins and gloves, letterman jockwear, and distressed leather coats with leather-covered buttons. Everthing about the show, from the dark garage setting that Miyashita found in the Bastille, to the ACE Hotel blankets he gave the audience to keep them warm, demonstrated a loving nod to Portland and the effortless, unpretentious style that exists here.

Sad but Good

I just read this one and it is really good. Here is a description of the story:

Ghost Stories follows the lives and relationship of brothers Lou and Vince Lebeuf over the course of nearly seven decades. In this volume, eldest brother Lou, now a deaf and lonely man, lives out his final days on his farm full of guilt and regret for the decisions he made that tore his family apart. From their childhood on the farm, to Toronto in the 1950’s (where they both played professional hockey), Lou revisits his life, a silent observer haunted by his own memories.
